And statesmen at her council met
Who knew the seasons, when to take
Occasion by the hand, and make
The bounds of freedom wider yet.
But Memory blushes at the sneer,
And Honor turns with frown defiant,
And Freedom, leaning on her spear,
Laughs louder than the laughing giant.
A democracy,--that is a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people;of course, a government of the principles of eternal justice, the unchanging law of God; for shortness' sake I will call it the idea of Freedom.
"Freedom!" their battle-cry,--
"Freedom! or leave to die!"
His eyes
All radiant with glad surprise,
Looked forward through the Centuries
And saw the seeds which sages cast
In the world's soil in cycles past
Spring up and blossom at the last;
Saw how the souls of men had grown,
And where the scythes of Truth had mown
Clear space for Liberty's white throne;
Saw how, by sorrow tried and proved,
The blackening stains had been removed
Forever from the land he loved;
Saw Treason crushed and Freedom crowned,
And clamorous Faction, gagged and bound,
Gasping its life out on the ground.
So long as faith with freedom reigns
And loyal hope survives,
And gracious charity remains
To leaven lowly lives;
While there is one untrodden tract
For intellect or will,
And men are free to think and act,
Life is worth living still.
Wide open and unguarded stand our gates,
Named of the four winds, North, South, East and West;
Portals that lead to an enchanted land...
Here, it is written, Toil shall have its wage
And Honor honor, and the humblest man
Stand level with the highest in the law.
Of such a land have men in dungeons dreamed
And with the vision brightening in their eyes
Gone smiling to the fagot and the sword.
O Liberty, white Goddess! is it well
To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast
Fold Sorrow's children, soothe the hurts of Fate,
Lift the down-trodden, but with hand of steel
Stay those who to thy sacred portals come
To waste the gifts of Freedom.
March to the battle-field,
The foe is now before us;
Each heart is Freedom's shield,
And heaven is shining o'er us.
One should never put on one's best trousers to go out in to fight for freedom.
Whose service is perfect freedom.
Human beings are defined by freedom of choice. Once you have them doing what theyre told is good just because theyre going to get a lump of sugar instead of a kick up the ahss (?!) then ethnics no longer exists. The state could tell them it was good to go off and mug and rape and kill some other nation.
Freedom has a lovely voice. Here is good, and there is evil - look on both, then take your choice
Choice is free but seldom easy - that's what human freedom means!
Freedom's absurd, another big word, another pull of wind in the ear
Why did God allow evil to exist? A question not to be asked. Without evil there could be no freedom of choice
God gave his creatures the most tremendous endowment, the thing most like his own essence - I mean freedom of choice. If he knows in advance what his creatures are going to do, then he's denying them freedom. So he deliberately blacks out foreknowledge. God could know, if he wished, but out of respect and love for his creatures, he refuses to know. Can you imagine a more awesome gift than this - God denying himself out of sheer love?
I went back to my novel, crumpled the sheet I had started, and forced the characters back into total servitude to my will. Slaves, sort of, with only the illusion of freedom. Like all of us.
He loves his creature so well that He grants them the gift of his own essence - utter freedom
A man may be free of illness as a dog may be free of fleas, but absolute freedom is a void
Freedom is the right to be wrong, not the right to do wrong.
People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
The fear of capitalism has compelled socialism to widen freedom, and the fear of socialism has compelled capitalism to increase equality.
Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say?
Absolute freedom mocks at justice. Absolute justice denies freedom.
